Many of our UU Principles call us to act for justice for people and our mother earth. At UUFC, we seek ways to uplift the worth and dignity of all people by partnering with other communities of faith and community organizations in Chico and Butte County. Aligning with the UUA’s Side with Love campaign, we strive for justice, equity, and compassion in human relations, and work toward the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.

Justice work at UUFC has a long history and currently takes many forms. We invite you to learn more about our Housing Justice and Food Justice work on those webpages, other efforts described below, and get involved as you feel called!

Social Justice Committee (SJC)

Members and friends volunteer within this UUFC Committee to engage in ongoing work that challenges social injustices with a focus on the homelessness challenges in our Chico community and Butte County. The SJC meets on the second Sunday of each month on UUFC campus at noon. For more information or to get involved, contact co-chairpersons, either Wayne Shems or Bob Crowe.

Speaking Out

You’ll often find UUFC members and friends marching in downtown Chico and further afield in support of women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, racial equity, affordable housing, and climate justice. Be sure to subscribe to the E-news or visit our Facebook page for current information on upcoming events.

Working for Climate Justice

Our efforts to support climate justice are in keeping with our UU principles and the broader UU faith. We believe that climate justice and social justice are deeply interconnected.

Some UUFC members participate in the public information efforts of the Chico City Climate Action Commission and support the proposals in the city’s Climate Action Plan. Members are also active in the current public participation phase of updating the Butte County Climate Action Plan. On the national level, UUs support the U. N. Sustainable Development Goals.  

Challenging Racism

Through the SJC, UUFC installed a Black Lives Matter banner at the church. Rev. Plude led a dedication ceremony in August 2020. UUFC continues other efforts supporting equity and inclusion for all our neighbors. 

Promoting Community Safety

With the support and knowledge of the UUFC Board, members of the SJC contribute to discussions within and support the goals of Concerned Citizens for Justice – Chico (CC4J), working “to build responsive, transparent and compassionate partnerships between law enforcement/ first responders and the community… based on mutual trust and respect.”

Supporting Our Community 

Each quarter, we identify a local organization that helps the community to receive one quarter of our Sunday cash contributions. Currently we are supporting Safe Space. Click here for a list of other organizations we have recently supported.
