Most economists, politicians, business leaders, journalists, and everyday citizens praise a growing economy and an increasing GDP. They place their faith in markets as a means of achieving human progress. Some have argued that all this amounts to a new secular religion. Bruce Grelle (Ph.D. University of Chicago) taught for 31 years in the Department of Comparative Religion and Humanities at Chico State. He is a past-president of the Chico Area Interfaith Council and currently attends Trinity United Methodist Church. He is author of Antonio Gramsci and the Question of Religion and co-author of The Practices of Global Ethics: Historical Backgrounds, Current Issues, and Future Prospects.
