Most economists, politicians, business leaders, journalists, and everyday citizens praise a growing economy and an increasing GDP. They place their faith in markets as a means of achieving human progress. Some have argued that all this amounts to a new secular religion. Professor Grelle invites us to rethink what we mean by “faith” and “sustainability” in discussions of environment, economy, and society. Bruce Grelle (Ph.D. University of Chicago) taught for 31 years in the Department of Comparative Religion and Humanities at Chico State. He is a past-president of the Chico Area Interfaith Council and currently attends Trinity United Methodist Church. He is author of Antonio Gramsci and the Question of Religion and co-author of The Practices of Global Ethics: Historical Backgrounds, Current Issues, and Future Prospects.
